Calling Dr.Michael Williams patiens and any with hospital first week advice
I have been approved and scheduled for surgery 4/9/09. I have preop on 4/8/09, but I would like to go this weekend and get the things I need for the hospital and at least my first week at home.
I originally had the band, but am revising to the RNY. My husband has an RNY w/band, but his original RNY was done in 1999 and it was open so I things have changed drastically.
Questions:
1) Anything you would really recommend for the hospital?
2) I know I need Tums & vitamins. Any suggestions for first week or two?
I'm not sure of the Phase 1 diet as of yet, so any information you can give me would be very much appreciated.
Thanks for your help!
Terri

Answers:
1) Doesnt really matter...you probably wont use any of it...except maybe some chapstick! You will be sleeping and walking most of the time! ((I was only in the hospital for about 36 hours!))
2) Protein powder...but I wouldnt stress over what kind and what not...you probably wont REALLY like any of it! I do suggest some no sugar added applesauce, yogurt, and sf pudding/popsicles.
Grabs Dr Williams "bible" hehe
Stage 1 Diet:
The stage 1 diet starts from your first day after discharge from the hospital and lasts for 2 weeks. The stage one diet consist of liquids, cottage cheese, Jell-O, broth, cream of wheat, grits, apple sauce, blendarized soups, yogurt, and sugar free popsicles.
During stage 1, patients should have 3 PROTEIN SHAKES DAILY. Meals should last 30-45 minutes. Getting use to this slow pace is very difficult so patients should concentrate on meals and avoid distractions during meals. The use of a medicine cup to pace your meal consumption is often helpful during this stage.
I just had my 6 month check up. And I told my mom on the way home...If Dr Williams or Janet told me to eat mud pies for a month...I would! So, just do what they say to do...and you will be fine! :)
Not only am I healthy now...I look better...I feel better.....but, MOST importantly...I, FINALLY, LOVE MYSELF!
You can send me a mesage if you want to chat!!!

In my first surgery (RNY open) The things I used @ the hospital, is chapstick, my house coat, house shoes, and the major thing that kept me from choking someone, was the "desk" fan. The noise alone helped me sleep. And the poor lady next to me had cancer, so all her alarms and beeps and stuff like that drove me nucking futs. (what was I going to do, complain???) and we couldn't have the A/C down very far (she was freezing all the time) so the fan saved me in more ways than one! OH!!! some kind of "wet wipes" for your bottom.
I wasn't allowed to take a shower for 3 days, but when I did, man did I feel good. I had my own good, downey smelling house coat, and MAN....did I feel like a woman after that hair wash and shower! They will most likely have shampoo, soap and stuff for you to use.
I wouldn't really worry about books, computer and stuff like that. Because you are going to be sleeping most of the time.
If it ends up you need something to look at, have someone get you some mags. Maybe the nurses would be willing to pass some that they have or go get you some.
Good luck girl!
